Postpartum depression and birth trauma training for therapists

The weeks and months after birth are when many perinatal mood and anxiety disorders show up, and when your clients are least likely to have time to ask for help. Our postpartum trainings give you the screening tools, language and treatment approaches to meet new parents where they are.

Clinical focus areas

  • Postpartum depression and anxiety
  • Birth trauma
  • Attachment and bonding
  • Sleep deprivation and emotional regulation

What you’ll learn

Skills you can use with your next postpartum client

  • Tell the difference between the baby blues, postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD and psychosis
  • Use validated screening tools such as the EPDS and know what to do with a positive screen
  • Assess and treat birth trauma, including trauma-focused approaches such as EMDR
  • Support attachment and bonding when a parent feels disconnected from the baby
  • Build sleep protection and emotional-regulation plans that fit real newborn life

Why it matters

The CDC reports that about 1 in 8 women with a recent live birth experience symptoms of postpartum depression, and mental health conditions are a leading underlying cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States. Trained clinicians change that picture.
